endless rain. three moods. nothing else.
rain sounds is a free web app that plays continuous, seamlessly looping rain. Pick one of three moods, press begin, and it rains until you stop it. The loops are gapless, so the rain never stutters, restarts, or clicks.
drizzle is a light, sparse patter, barely there. downpour is heavy, steady rain all around you. tent is rain drumming on canvas with thunder far away. Switching moods crossfades the sound over two seconds while the visual rain changes density to match, like the weather itself turning.
Steady rain is a natural broadband sound. It masks the sudden noises, such as traffic, doors, and voices, that wake you at night or break your concentration. The research on continuous background sound is encouraging: a 2017 study in Frontiers in Neurology found that broadband sound cut the time healthy sleepers took to fall asleep by roughly 38% in a model of transient insomnia (Messineo et al., 2017). An earlier study in the Journal of Theoretical Biology reported that steady pink-noise-like sound produced more stable brain activity and more consolidated sleep (Zhou et al., 2012). Rain belongs to this family of smooth, unpredictable-yet-even sounds, which is why so many people fall asleep to it.
Is it free? Yes, completely. No account, no ads, nothing to install.
Does it really loop forever? Yes. The audio plays as a gapless loop until you pause it or the sleep timer fades it out.
Can I fall asleep to it? That is what the timer is for: choose 15, 30, or 60 minutes and the rain fades out slowly over a final minute, gently enough not to wake you.
Does it keep playing when my phone locks? Yes, the audio continues with the screen off, and play controls appear on your lock screen. There is also an optional keep-screen-awake mode if you want the visuals running.
What am I looking at? Real rain filmed through a window, with generated rainfall layered over it, in a night theme and an overcast day theme.
